Engine Desktop | Running two versions at once

Engine Desktop | Running two versions at once

It is now possible to have two Engine desktop versions open simultaneously. This also comes with certain risks, including potential database corruption. This article outlines the risks and how to avoid any potential issues that may arise.

Here’s what you need to know:

1. You can open multiple older versions of the Engine Desktop application without any issues. However, you will receive a warning message if you attempt to run them concurrently. This is designed to help you manage your workflow without unexpected interruptions.

2. For versions released from 4.5.0 and onwards, the same warning system applies. If you try to open a newer version while another one is running, a notification will alert you to the potential conflict.

3. Problems typically arise when a user has an older version installed and then tries to open a newer version, or vice versa. This is due to the different methods we use to detect whether an application is already running.

  • For most users, this should not pose a significant issue. When you install a new version, it generally overwrites the previous one, minimizing the chances of conflicts.
  • Users who have intentionally installed multiple versions—such as renaming them, or those who have both Alpha/Beta versions alongside Release versions—may encounter more challenges.

In summary, while the ability to run multiple versions of Engine Desktop is possible, it is crucial to be aware of the associated risks. By following the guidelines above, you can ensure a smooth experience when running two separate versions.
