Denon DJ | Channel Fader Maintenance

APRIL 2, 2025
To ensure optimal performance and longevity of your DJ controller, it is essential to keep your faders clean of any dust or debris that may build up over time with regular use. Over time, dust, dirt, and debris can build up within the fader, leading to inadequate electrical contact. This may result in crackling or popping sounds, static noises, or even audio dropouts when adjusting the fader. Additionally, the presence of dirt and grime can make the fader feel sticky or challenging to move at times. Regular maintenance, including cleaning, helps prevent wear and tear caused by dirt and oxidation. This can significantly extend the lifespan of your mixer or controller.  Tools required:  Cotton swabs  Soft cloth or towel  Compressed air duster Electrical contact cleaner(ex. DeoxIT D5) Plastic bag or cup (to contain loose fader caps) Small bottle cap (to dip cotton swabs in contact solution) To clean your channel faders, start by ensuring your mixer or controller is powered OFF and disconnected from power.  Begin by removing all of the fader caps. Use a plastic bag or small cup to hold the fader caps as to not misplace them. Using compressed air duster, spray a few times in each fader slot. Position the fader all the way up, and spray from bottom to top using an upward motion. Be gentle when cleaning to avoid damaging internal components inside the fader. Then position the fader all the way down, and spray top to bottom with a downward motion. This will ensure any dust or debris is cleared out of the fader. Take a cotton swab and apply some contact cleaner solution. You may need to pull off some cotton to allow the swab to fit inside the channel fader opening. We recommend spraying some solution into a small bottle cap to dip the cotton swab in the cleaner, so you do not have to spray inside the fader. Be sure not to drench the cotton swab, as only a small amount of cleaner is required. Position the fader all the way up, and wipe from bottom to top using an upward motion. Be gentle when cleaning to avoid damaging internal components inside the fader.  Then position the fader all the way down, and wipe top to bottom with a downward motion.  Once all the channel faders are cleaned with contact solution, allow the unit to dry upside down over a soft cloth or towel. We recommend allowing at least 1 hour to ensure the contact solution has completely dried. After allowing ample time for the unit to dry, flip the unit back upright, and reinstall the fader caps.  Plug in your mixer or controller to power and test the faders. They should now operate smoothly and without any crackling or signal dropouts. The following video from Sweetwater is a great resource: By following these steps, you can effectively clean your channel faders and maintain optimal performance. If the channel fader continues to act up after cleaning, please open a support ticket.

My fader doesn't respond until I move it up and down. What do I do?

JANUARY 4, 2023
While using a DJ controller (USB or standalone) users may notice that their pitch and volume faders may not respond right away. This is a function called "soft takeover" and it's completely normal.  "Soft takeover" occurs when there’s a discrepancy between the pitch/BPM/volume setting of a deck and the physical position of the fader, leading the software or OS to temporarily “take over” control of the track’s BPM until the pitch fader is returned to its previous position. This prevents sudden, extreme tempo changes when adjusting your tracks’ BPM. In this video, we'll demonstrate soft takeover, why it is activated, and why this is important in nearly all DJ software & hardware. Full Transcript: Hello there!  This is Riley at inMusic, and today we're going to take a quick look at the concept of “soft takeover” and how it affects your DJ controller’s pitch faders. What is soft takeover? First, let's define exactly what “soft takeover” is.  Think of soft takeover as a fail-safe feature in your DJ hardware & software; it prevents sudden, drastic changes to the BPM of your tracks by forcing you to move the fader to the correct position before changing their tempo.  Soft takeover is built into virtually all DJ software, and most popular DAWs, for this very reason.   How soft takeover affects using SYNC So let's see how soft takeover affects your pitch faders when DJing with SYNC.  Here, I'm using a Denon DJ SC Live 4.  So I’ll load a track on Deck 1, this one here with a tempo of 127bpm, and turn on SYNC…and on Deck 2, a track with a tempo of 124bpm, and I'll also turn on SYNC on that deck.  As soon as I start playing the Deck 1 track, you'll see that SYNC changes the tempo of the track on Deck 2 to match it.   Next to the pitch fader on Deck 2, you can see that the center pitch light is now turned off, despite the fact that the pitch fader is still in center position.  If I want to manually change the tempo of this track with the pitch fader, you can see that when I move it, no adjustment is made to the track's tempo until the pitch fader reaches the place it would be if I'd manually adjusted it to 127bpm, then I'm free to adjust the tempo however I want.   What you're seeing here is soft takeover in action.  If soft takeover didn’t do this, the tempo of this track would jump back down to 124bpm as soon as I moved the pitch fader and overrode SYNC mode, which would make it very difficult to DJ. How soft takeover affects DJing using four decks Let's check out another example.  Here, I’m using Serato DJ Pro with a Numark NS6II, which has four decks.  As you can see, there are only two physical decks on the unit, but each one has a DECK button for switching between decks 1 & 3 and 2 & 4.  This means that if I'm DJing using all four decks, I'll be sharing all of these controls (transport the pads, pitch, FX, etc.) between two different decks on each side. To show you what I mean, I'll load a track on Deck 1 and another one on Deck 3.  Switching back to Deck 1, let's say I want to change the BPM of this track from 132 to 135.  I'll just move the pitch fader until it's at the tempo I want.  Now, if I were to switch back to Deck 3, you can see this little arrow light illuminate.   This is telling us that soft takeover is active on this pitch fader.  If I try to adjust the tempo of this Deck 3 track using the fader, nothing will happen until I move the pitch fader back to center position.  And as you can see, as soon as I'm back at 0%, I can adjust the track's BPM freely. Now, if I want to adjust this track's tempo to say, 130BPM, when I switch back to Deck 1, you'll see that the tempo is still adjusted to 130BPM on Deck 3, but soft takeover is now active on Deck 1, and I won't be able to change this track's tempo until I move the pitch fader back to where I'd previously adjusted it. Without soft takeover, I would have experienced noticeable tempo changes when switching between these decks, simply because the DJ software would have taken the pitch fader’s physical position at face value. Final thoughts & further support So that's all for this video.  I hope you now have a more solid grasp on the concept of soft takeover and how it works to your advantage while DJing.   For more information and further support with using your hardware or software from Denon DJ, Numark, or Rane DJ, check out the links in the description, where you'll find each brand's Knowledge Base and portals to reach out to their dedicated technical support teams. Thank you as always for watching, and I'll catch you next time!

Hovering my hand above the platter stops playback - Is this normal?

MARCH 15, 2024
Yes - this is normal and expected behaviour. Many of our DJ products utilise "Touch-Capacitive" platters. Touch capacitive technology is designed to allow for touch-based interaction with devices.  It works through utilising sensors that detect changes in capacitance. Capacitance is the ability of an object to store an electrical charge. When you touch the platter, your body acts as a capacitor and the sensor detects the change in capacitance caused by your hand's proximity. This change is what causes the platter to stop.  However, everyone's bodies are different and will have varying levels of capacitance. It is also possible for capacitance to be detected over small distances. Because of this, you may find that holding your hand above the platter causes it to register a touch. The distance in which this occurs will vary from person to person. To avoid unintentional triggering of touch capacitive platters, it's important to be aware of your hand's proximity to the platter and to adjust your movements accordingly.

Denon DJ | Preparing For Your First Gig

AUGUST 22, 2024
You have now just landed your first gig and we understand that this can bring excitement however, also it can be quite a nervous experience so we are InMusic would like to help calm those nerves and get you ready to smash it! When you land your first gig it will be worth checking out the venue if possible as it will allow you to find out the following: How big is the venue What sound system you are using The look and feel of the venue The crowd you can expect to see What equipment you will be using (If not bringing your setup) Once you know what you are working with you can start to prepare your setlist for the night and it will be wise to tailor your set for the night and create a playlist. Depending on the gig if you are playing alongside a line up or artists we recommend you look at the artists playing to see what style they are bringing to the night so that you can align yourself with them.  Tip: We recommend that if there is a headliner that you don't play any of there material as that way you allowing them to turn up and do what they do best which will be a sign of respect.   If you are only performer on the night you will have a lot more control and can look to play a larger spectrum of music. You will need to prepare a large setlist for this night with multiple genre's.  Tip: If you can establish an WIFI connection you can look to use streaming services that way you have a larger database to use if you are still in the process of building your library.  Furthermore, if you are taking only USB's or a Laptop to the venue please always make sure to bring backups as you never know what could occur on the night which might result in you needing to have something just in case anything were to go wrong.   Lastly, relax and enjoy yourself as your energy will become infectious to the crowd.  If you have any questions, or require any additional assistance, please contact our support team HERE.

Denon DJ | What headphones can I use with my controller

AUGUST 7, 2024
Well you will need to make sure that you are using headphones that meet the specifications which typically will be the following: 1/4” (6.35 mm) stereo output (headphones) 1/8” (3.5 mm) stereo output (headphones) Note: We do advise that you check the connections on your controller/device prior to purchasing new headphones to use with your device. This is because your unit may have either 1 of the above or both inputs.  DJ Headphones will have a 32 OHM impedance typically however, you will be able to check this via the manufacturers specifications. These are suitable for most DJ environments. Using higher-impedance headphones will work,  but users may perceive a lack of volume compared to lower-impedance solutions.  What is TRS? TRS stands for Tip-Ring-Sleeve, which describes its three contact points that run along the cable. A Tip, Ring, and Sleeve connector is a common choice for stereos since the extra ring provides the two contacts a way to get a right and left audio channel.  What is TRRS?  The term TRRS stands for Tip-Ring-Ring-Sleeve as it has an additional ring compared to a TRS cable. Most laptops, computers, gaming consoles, and mobile phones come with TRRS jacks. They allow you to speak through the built-in microphone and listen to the audio.  If you have any questions, or require any additional assistance, please contact our support team HERE.
